Horn (instrument) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mozart Horn Concerti, for example, were written for this type of horn, called the natural horn in the modern literature.
Around 1815, the horn took on a new form, as valves were introduced, which allowed the player to switch between crooks without the effort of manually removing one from the horn and inserting a new one.
The relative merits of F versus B-flat were a hotbed of debate between horn players of the late nineteenth century, until the German horn maker Kruspe produced a prototype of the "double horn" in 1897.

Horn (instrument): Just the facts...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Early French horns were much simpler than current horns, which consist of complicated tubing and a set of three to five valves (depending on the type of horn).
Hand horn technique developed in the classical period (Mozart's 4 Horn Concerti and Concert Rondo were written with this technique in mind, as was all the music Beethoven and Brahms wrote for the horn) makes use of covering the bell to various degrees, and thereby lower in the pitch accordingly.
It has been speculated that one of the reasons Brahms wrote for horn in the awkward key of B was to encourage the horns to use the natural horn; he did not like the sound of the new valved horns.

HORN - LoveToKnow Article on HORN
The body of the horn without crooks is of the length to produce 8 ft. C., and forms the standard, being known as the a1to horn in C, which is the highest key in which the horn is pitched.
The harmonic series of the horn, or the open notes obtainable without using valves or crooks, is written as for the alto horn in C of 8 ft. tone, which forms the standard of notation.
It is clear therefore that horns with tubing respectively 8 ft. and 16 ft. long, which must have been disposed in coils as in the present day, were in use in Italy before the middle of the 1 7th century, fifty years before the date of their reputed invention in Paris.

Also known as the double horn or the F horn, the modern French horn was derived from France in the late 16th century and was originally used as a hunting horn.
In 1650, the hunting horn began to appear in concert halls and French opera, and because it didn't blend well with violins and oboes at the time, it was primarily used for effect in hunting scenes.
Eventually crooks were added to the horn -- small, coiled, brass tubes that players inserted between the mouthpiece and the main body of the instrument that lengthened the horn to produce a different key.

The Horn Players' FAQ, V 0.58
Most modern horns are known as "double" horns - not because there are two of them, but because they are equipped with a "trigger" valve (usually at the thumb) which changes the pitch of the instrument from F to Bb.
A descant horn is a smaller horn (a smaller diameter, and shorter length), usually pitched in F alto, that has a brighter sound and which facilitate playing in the upper register, much as a piccolo trumpet compared to normal trumpets.
The horn player of that era had to be a master of stopping and hand muting, and could produce notes outside the normal harmonic range by changing the key of the instrument.
