Hospitals are usually distinguished from other types of medical facilities by their ability to admit and care for inpatients.
A general hospital is typically the major health care facility in its region, with large numbers of beds for intensive care and long-term care; and specialized facilities for surgery, plastic surgery, childbirth, bioassay laboratories, and so forth.
State-supported hospitals also appeared in China during the first millennium A.D. In Europe the medieval concept of Christian care evolved during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries into a secular one, but it was in the eighteenth century that the modern hospital began to appear, serving only medical needs and staffed with physicians and surgeons.

Since it started collecting data in 1989, the group has reported death rates among hospitals in Pennsylvania, but those figures are not always the best indicator of quality, because some hospitals treat the oldest and sickest patients, which can make their numbers seem high.
Hospitals, who are required to report the data by state law, agreed the report is a useful tool but urged health care consumers to use it with caution.

Many astrologers are unaware that many hospitals in Pennsylvania did not record birth times in local time prior to this date.
Pennsylvania hospitals were required to record the time of birth on the hospital birth record as Eastern Standard Time even when Eastern Daylight Time or War Time was being observed.
It is not uncommon in Pennsylvania for a mother to insist that the birth time for her child is exactly one hour off than the time the hospital lists, or for a mother to document in a baby's book a birth time which is different thatn the officially listed time on the hospital birth record.
