Independent record label - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An independent record label is variously described as a record label operating without the funding (or outside the organizations) of the major record labels, and/or a label that subscribes to indie philosophies such as DIY and anti-corporate art.
Independent labels are no longer simply business entities but since the early 1980s (and exploding in the 1990s) have formed the core of the cultural indie music "scene".
Starting with the widespread piracy lawsuits of the early-2000s, non-membership in the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) (and its foreign counterparts) is increasingly seen as a prerequisite for a label to be truly independent, although this view is not universal.

 Record label
Most major record labels are owned by a few large multinational companies that make up the almost all of the global recording industry, although there is a recent resurgence in independent record labels.
Often the record label's decisions are correct ones from a commercial perspective, but this typically frustrates the artist who feels that their artwork is being destroyed.
Independent labels are typically artist-owned (although not always), with a focus usually on making good music and not necessarily on the business aspects of the industry or making lots of money.

Distribution for the major labels is handled by major distributors which are wholesalers that take the records produced by the record labels and coordinate their placement into consumer retail stores.
There are many types of independent (or indie) labels, but you can think of them as falling into two broad categories: (i) indie labels which are associated with major labels, and (ii) indie labels which are truly independent and have no association with a major label.
Independent distributors typically serve only a few states, so the indie label must use several of them in order to get its records into stores across the country.

Labels are commonly viewed as a means to an end, as mere conduits rather than shapers of musical culture.
Labels can confer badges of identity on their artists; this is especially true in the hip-hop world.
Labels like Playscape, Red Giant and Pi are run directly by musicians and cater to their own highly specific needs; others, like Palmetto and HiPNOTIC, have made their mark not through a specific look or sound, but rather an overarching commitment to musical diversity and grass-roots artist development.

The New York Times > Business > Record Labels Said to Be Next on Spitzer List for Scrutiny
Spitzer's office have served subpoenas on the four major record corporations - the Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, the EMI Group and the Warner Music Group - seeking copies of contracts, billing records and other information detailing their ties to independent middlemen who pitch new songs to radio programmers in New York State.
The major record labels have paid middlemen for decades, though the practice has long been derided as a way to skirt a federal statute - known as the payola law - outlawing bribes to radio broadcasters.
The promoters then bill record labels for each new song that is played; the total tab costs the record industry tens of millions of dollars each year.
