  Encyclopedia: List of stable isotopes
Isotopes are atoms of a chemical element whose nuclei have the same atomic number, Z, but different atomic weights, A. The word isotope, meaning at the same place, comes from the fact that isotopes are located at the same place on the periodic table.
Note that tungsten and bismuth do have isotopes which are very slightly radioactive; these have been excluded from this list, which strictly limits to entirely stable entities.
Deuterium (symbol 2H) is a stable isotope of hydrogen with a natural abundance of one atom in 6500 of hydrogen.

Isotopes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
This means that different isotopes of an element will have different masses, since both the protons and the neutrons contribute about equally to the mass of an atom.
Once the precise atomic masses of each isotope, and their relative abundances are known, the average mass of the isotope as found in nature can be calculated.
Lead's isotopic abundance is one of the least reproducible because various isotopes are the final products of the radioactive decay of a number of heavy elements.

Some of the isotopes produced by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are used to support vital research that could lead to major breakthroughs in the treatment of disease.
One of the most promising of these involves the use of radioactive isotopes (radioisotopes) called "alpha-emitters" and "beta-emitters." These are radioisotopes that emit particles capable of destroying cancer cells and reducing tumors.
Methods of linking radioactive isotopes to these homing materials were also discovered, resulting in so-called "smart bullets" that can be delivered directly to the locations of cancer cells.
