 Jam band
The term jam band is commonly used to describe psychedelic-rock influenced bands whose concerts largely consist of bands reinterpreting their songs as springboards into extended improvisational pieces of music.
While The Grateful Dead are generally accepted to be the founders of the jam band scene, the concept of spontaneous improvisation of music is by no means their invention.
Early jazz musicians both pioneered the idea of improvisation and coined the term 'jam', though these 'jam sessions' tended to be completely free of constraints, whereas bands in the jam-scene tend to use the pretense of being confined by the boundaries of the song they are 'jamming out'.

Techdirt: Pearl Jam Shuns Copy Protection For Concert Downloads
Pearl Jam joins a number of bands offering copy protection-free downloads of live shows, something that's proven to be a very lucrative business for some of them.
Pearl Jam may be one of the most prominent *former* major-label acts to have gone "independent" (whatever the hell that means anymore), however, the fact that this endeavor is available to them in the first place is *only* because a major, corporate record label pushed their CD's out to bazillions of listeners worldwide.
Pearl Jam's efforts are noteworthy because they are a major act that could choose to play ball with a major label again, but has eschewed that to go their own way.

With Eddie Vedder's yearning vocals and sober, emotionally charged lyrics, the band put forth a landmark debut that paid homage to rock's past while paving the way for its future.
Fusing metal, rap, and funk, the band took a clamorous, deeply rooted message of indicting big business and government corruption, and they combined it with an attitude that said they'd beat up the neighbors if they dared to complain.
But the ultimate hook is the album's lyrics, which are nearly irresistible in their invitation to sing along with the band.

Thanks to a suggestion by Eugene Hu, I have decided to create a separate list of the bands that are very much against taping and actively search out tapers during their shows.
The band would be very grateful for a copy of the show, DAT or analog, so they can continue their archiving effort.
