Jazz   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Jazz, a musical form that grew out of a cross-fertilization of folk blues, ragtime, and European music, particularly band music, has been called the first art form to develop in the United States of America.
One of the key influences on jazz was blues, a rural folk art that changed as fl musicians migrated to the cities in the late 19th century.
The early development of jazz was racially segregated, reflecting the culture of the United States at the time, with the innovation of mainly fl club musicians being taken onto bandstands by white band leaders, who tended to mould the music more to orthodox rhythms and harmony.

At the root of jazz is the blues, the folk music of former African slaves in the American South and their descendants, heavily influenced by West African cultural and musical traditions, that evolved as fl musicians migrated to the cities -- most notably, the Storyville district of New Orleans -- in the late 19th century.
Early jazz influences found their first mainstream expression in the marching band music of the day, which was the standard form of popular concert music at the turn of century.

Some poor souls are under the misconception that "jazz" only means Chuck Mangione or George Benson, forgetting such pioneers as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Sun Ra and Albert Ayler, all of whom are the real grand-daddies of punk.
One other important common denominator is that they were all jazz fans, using their guitars to imiate their favorite players or actually using horns themselves.
By in large though, this kind of jazz influence was not directly seen in most punk rock.
