Jazz is a musical art form rooted in West African cultural and musical expression and in the African American blues tradition, with diverse influences over time, commonly characterized by blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response, polyrhythms and improvisation.
At the root of jazz is the blues, the folk music of former African slaves in the American South and their descendants, heavily influenced by West African cultural and musical traditions, that evolved as fl musicians migrated to the cities -- most notably, the Storyville district of New Orleans -- in the late 19th century.
Early jazz influences found their first mainstream expression in the marching band music of the day, which was the standard form of popular concert music at the turn of century.

Much of the music for this dancing was not jazz, but it was new, and the fashion for new music did involve enthusiasm for some idea of jazz.
Later bebop musicians, such as trumpeter Miles Davis made more stylistic advances with modal jazz where the harmonic structure of pieces was much more free than previously, and frequently only implied by skeletal piano chords and bass parts.

As I compiled these questions, I thought that it would be good to get answers from other professional jazz trombonists- I don't profess to know everything about jazz trombone, and I know that many times, others for whom I have great respect will have completely different opinions or thoughts on subjects of our mutual interest.
I think this may be due to the fact that improvising and playing swinging jazz is a little more difficult on the trombone than on other instruments, and there are then fewer numbers of competent jazz trombonists to pass the information on to students.
In my school's jazz band, the trumpets are right behind the trombones and I'm worried that I might be harming my hearing.

In these days when so many new players seem to be either pianist/singers or sax players, how about a recall for the merits of the trombone.
You know, I've never heard him with his band but I've enjoyed his playing a lot when I've seen him with Peter Apfelbaum's Hyroglyfics Emsemble or sitting in as an extra horn with Steve Bernstein's Sex Mob.
I think he might also be playing now in Bernstein's Monday night orchestra over at the Jazz Standard, but I might be mistaken.
