Philadelphia, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2006) -- Journalism will survive only if it adapts to the times, writes Geneva Overholser in a new report titled "On Behalf of Journalism: A Manifesto for Change." The report is being released today by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.
"The story of American journalism is undergoing a dramatic rewrite," says Overholser, a nationally known reporter and editor who formerly worked for The New York Times, the Washington Post and the Des Moines Register before joining the faculty of the Missouri School of Journalism.
In the process, topics such as the growing financial pressures on newspapers, the benefits of public vs. private ownership, credentialing of journalists, the role of government in a free press and new forms of media were discussed.

Reduced Stock Listings May Translate to Less Respect for Business Sections - Donald W. Reynolds National Center for ...
And it's not the fact that most of these newspapers are cutting stock listings to improve their profits because they'll be using less newsprint every day, or on the weekends.
What I'm worried about is the fact that the cutting of stock listings signals that the attention that top editors at newspapers paid to the business section throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s is waning, and without that attention, business sections could be headed into their own recession.
It dedicates only two pages to stock listings of the main Spanish index and offers the rest of stock market's information in its web, because it considers that the majority of the investors get the information in real-time from internet and there is no sense in publishing it printly.

 Handbook of Independent Journalism
Many news organizations assign journalists to cover specific areas, either geographic or topical, known as "beats." This is a term originally used to describe a regular route for a sentry or policeman.
Build a source list with as much contact information as you can pry loose, and stay in touch with those people by making regular "beat checks." In addition to covering the key players on the beat, a good beat reporter also looks at how their actions affect people in the community.
For each of these topics, the underlying issues are complicated and the journalist's job is to explain them clearly.

Student First Amendment Case - U.S. Courts Educational Outreach
Although their names were changed, the journalism teacher was concerned that students may be able to recognize the identity of the girls who were interviewed for the pregnancy article.
The Court noted that the paper was sponsored by the school and, as such, the school had a legitimate interest in preventing the publication of articles that it deemed inappropriate and that might appear to have the imprimatur of the school.
Specifically, the Court noted that the paper was not intended as a public forum in which everyone could share views; rather, it was a limited forum for journalism students to write articles pursuant to the requirements of their Journalism II class, and subject to appropriate editing by the school.
