From the reference in Pausanias (1, 5) we know that the pedestal supported statues of the ten legendary heroes of Attica who became the patrons of the ten groups (or tribes) into which Kleisthenes, in 508 B.C., divided the population of Attica for administrative and political purposes.
The original heroes as name by Pausanias were Hippothoon, Antiochos, Ajax, Leos, Erechtheus, Aigeus, Oineus, Akamas, Kekrops and Pandion.
