The Lake District is only about 55 km (34 miles) across (north-to-south or west-to-east), but manages to pack into that relatively small area a wide variety of scenery, dominated by various formations left over by the last ice age.
The Lake District is intimately associated with the history of English literature in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Early visitors to the Lake District who travelled for the education and pleasure of the journey include Celia Fiennes who in 1698 undertook a journey the length of England, including riding through Kendal and over Kirkstone Pass into Patterdale, published in her book Great Journey to Newcastle and Cornwall.
The line to Coniston opened in 1848 (although links to the national network were not complete until 1857); the line from Penrith through Keswick to Cockermouth in 1865; and the line to Lakeside at the foot of Windermere in 1869.
Out of his long life of eighty years, sixty were spent amid its lakes and mountains, first as a schoolboy at Hawkshead, and afterwards living in Grasmere (1799-1813) and Rydal Mount (1813-50).

Urban lakes are affected by many factors, which can include runoff, seepage, rainfall, air deposition, over-use, artificial alterations of their basins, manipulation of plants and animals, the introduction of exotic species.
It is unusual for a lake in the metro area to have a watershed area smaller than the surface area of the lake.

Masuria (Mazury) is a historical and ethnographic region in northern Poland, encompassing the Masurian Lake District, a vast land subdivided into several smaller lake districts like the one around Suwalki and Augustow.
The area is often dubbed "a land of a thousand lakes", which hardly does it justice as the actual number of its lakes is about four thousand.
The deepest lake is the Hancza (108.5 m) in the Suwalki Lake District, and the longest one is the Jeziorak (27 km) in the Ilawa Lake District.

The list has been revised so many times, with additions and deletions, that one would think the mountains themselves were moving.
In reality, of course, they haven't risen or dropped an inch in the hundred years that the list has been around, remaining totally oblivious to the debate, and they'll still be there long after Munro's list has been forgotten.

Burns Lake was a very small town, and it is obvious that a big proportion of area young people took part in the races.
This list is probably incomplete, but it does indicate how many good skiers were produced in this era.It can be justifiably argued that the excellence of the Omineca team was the catalyst that started the fire that resulted in the phenomenal growth of skiing in B.C. since 1980.
