Planet Ark : Ontario ignores Great Lakes polluters - report
Ontario, the hub of Canada's industry, is considered by environmental groups to be among the worst offenders in North America.
The chemical manufacturing industry was by far the biggest violator of Ontario's waste-water pollution laws in 1998, dumping toxic and carcinogenic chemicals such as mercury, copper and cyanide into water, the report stated.
Ontario's Ministry of Environment made only one attempt at prosecuting offenders in 1998 and 14 in 1997, it stated.

Ontario can be divided into three major natural regions: the Canadian Shield (also known as the Laurentian Plateau), which cuts a wide swath across the center of the province; the Hudson Bay Lowlands to the north; and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowlands, which form the southernmost region.
Ontario’s highest point is in the Canadian Shield near Lake Timiskaming: Ishpatina Ridge (693 m/2,274 ft).
The third physical region of Ontario is the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowlands, home to most of the province’s population, agriculture, and industry.

Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands: Science and Conservation – Canadian Wildlife Service, Ontario Region
Lakes Ontario and Superior have been regulated at their outflows since the mid-1900s to permit consistent shipping and hydroelectric power production by reducing lake level variability.
Long-term reduction of water level extremes, particularly for Lake Ontario, may be playing a role in diminishing habitat diversity and thus the size of these bird populations.

Ontario beach, just west of the mouth of the Genesee River, was closed from 1967 until 1976 because it could not meet public health standards for fecal coliform bacteria.
Zebra mussels in Lake Ontario and the lower Genesee River have resulted in extra water treatment cost for industrial and municipal water users, agriculture, residences and golf courses.
The Lake Ontario portion of the Rochester Embayment also supports an exciting salmonid fishery whose development began in the early 1970s and peaked during the late 1980's.

 Bathymetry of Lake Ontario
Apparently in most areas around the lake perimeter, Quaternary sediments are relatively thin or absent, and bedrock exposures are common, possibly reflecting the effects of subglacial erosion and subsequent abrasion by lacustrine waves and currents.
This asymmetry is related to the bedrock configuration underneath the lake floor, and its differential resistance to glacial erosion (Hutchinson, et al., 1993).
This was probably the location of the Lake Ontario shoreline in early postglacial time, and the three channels were probably the main outflow channels for the lake at this time (Anderson and Lewis, 1985).
