The National Writers Union, the Editorial Freelancers Association, the National Association of Science Writers, and the American Medical Writers Association all have regular meetings, and they are very sucessful in terms of helping people get contacts, work, support, advice, and all of the benefits of congregation.
The National Writers Union science writers group had a similar series of meetings, except that we usually met in a restaurant, and it was more of a social get-together and less formally structured.
One woman who ran the National Writers Union business writers luncheon was so principled that she didn't want to take advantage of the situation by asking the editors for work herself.

The NY local is organizing a series of workshops in NYC for fiction writers and poets, but they've been slighting the needs of working writers.
If you're an experienced magazine writer, you can get paid 3 times as much for the same kind of work that you do for a PR agency.

But when I did, I contacted the person (and in this particular case, since the writer was a minor, her parents as well) and obtained their permission before using her letter.
While I do not abuse the posts of others, and I doubt any _responsible_ author would, I have to say that you must _assume_ that _anything_ you write (or otherwise post) on the internet can and probably will be used inappropriately by someone who doesn't know better, and without your permission.
But I think you will find that there is more to be learned from those aquarium writers who hang around here than there is risk that they will take advantage of you.

 NWU Poets & Fiction Writers Market News List — May 2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
While the buzz says that literary magazines are the strongest markets for poetry, the #1 position on the list is held by a general interest magazine, THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY while a regional general interest magazine, YANKEE, comes in at 9th.
Actually I could play around with this list for hours and come up with dozens of conclusions and a few of them might actually be accurate.
The only real point that could be made if that if you want to be a commercially sucessful writer who focuses on short stories then entering either the sf/f/h genres or the children/ya market may be the best strategy for doing that and I want to know your thoughts on this matter.
