Mail transfer agent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mail transfer agent or MTA (also called a mail transport agent, mail server, or a mail exchange server in the context of the Domain Name System) is a computer program or software agent that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another.
It receives messages from another MTA (relaying), a mail submission agent (MSA) that itself got the mail from a mail user agent (MUA), or directly from an MUA, thus acting as an MSA itself.
The delivery of e-mail to a user's mailbox typically takes place via a mail delivery agent (MDA); many MTAs have basic MDA functionality built in, but a dedicated MDA like procmail can provide more sophistication.

 Majordomo -- A venerable UNIX/Perl-based mailing-list manager
One of the first tools ever created for managing mailing lists on the Internet, Majordomo is a UNIX/Perl-based mailing-list manager that, while still quite functional for those working in a UNIX environment, is perhaps a little outdated when compared to both standalone mailing-list managers and e-mail servers with integrated mailing-list capabilities.
Majordomo doesn't actually do any mailing on its own; instead, it works in conjunction with a mail-transfer agent (such as sendmail, qmail, or smail), managing a list of e-mail addresses and sending them to the MTA for the actual mailing.
If you need to maintain mailing lists on a UNIX system and have a good working knowledge of the UNIX operating system, you should consider Majordomo for your system.

Antispam group blacklists marketing firm Exactis.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
According to a MAPS statement, approximately 150 mail servers belonging to Exactis.com, a marketing subsidiary of 24/7 Media, were placed on the Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) today, alerting Internet service providers and corporate messaging administrators so they can, if they choose, block e-mail coming from those addresses.
"The decision to list Exactis' mail servers occurred after Exactis repudiated a previously negotiated agreement to implement measures which would have prevented unsolicited bulk and commercial e-mail from being sent through Exactis' mail servers," wrote a MAPS spokeswoman in the statement.
Exactis is not following through on their commitment, and as a result, we feel that we have no other option in stemming the steady stream of unsolicited e-mail flowing from their mail servers but to list them in our RBL database.

The recipient's mail server must handle inability to access the sender's name server (caused, for example, by a DDOS attack) gracefully, perhaps by placing the message in temporary quarantine until the name server is accessible again.
It is for this reason, and for certain situations involving mailing lists and anonymous senders, that I believe bouncing messages immediately--or even during the SMTP session, as has been proposed--would be a bad idea.
