Guitar chords and chord shapes - explanations for my guitar chord dictionary
If you cannot find the chord you want on these pages, and you have already read the above sections on some of the common reasons why this might be, the chances are the chord type you are after isn't included in the list which is used to generate all the chord shapes.
The chord spelling is a listing of the notes of the major scale that are used to build the chord.
For example, a major chord is made up of the 1st, 3rd and 5th of the major scale, hence the spelling is: 1, 3, 5.

List of major chord shapes for guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are five basic sets of fingerings one can use to articulate a major chord on the guitar in standard tuning; two have the root of the chord on the 6th string, two have the root on the 5th string, and one has the root on the 4th string.
Fingering: This chord is most often fingered with the 2nd (middle) finger on the 5th string, the 3rd (ring) fin on the 4th string, and the 1st (index) fin on the 3rd string.
It is worth noting for players in the rock and metal styles that a power chord with its root on the sixth string is played using this shape; the high three notes (and sometimes the first octave) are not voiced.

 Guitar Notes: CHORD FAQ
A list of all major and minor triads is given at the end of this FAQ (Appendix B).
You could also include the 9th in an 11th chord, or the 9th and 11th in a 13th chord, but on a guitar this is usually not done.
C major has no sharps or flats G major has one sharp (F#) D major has 2 sharps (F# and C#) if we carry on finding the keys with 3, 4, 5 sharps we find that the next key in the series is a 5th higher than the previous one.

Guitar chords: chord dictionaries, lists of guitar chords
All the chord lists and chord dictionaries I've seen (both those on the net and those in books) have a fairly limited set of chords that they include shapes for.
A list containing 500 chords may sound like a lot, but it only represents a tiny fraction of all possible guitar chords (and I'm only talking about standard tuning here).
Such a list might cover 15 basic chord types (e.g major, minor, 7, m7, maj7, sus4, sus2, aug, dim, 5, 6, m6, 9, m9, 11) in all 12 keys, with 3 shapes for each chord.

Power chord - TheBestLinks.com - Electric guitar, Music, Punk, Rock music, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In music, a power chord is an interval which serves the diatonic function of a major or minor chord.
Power chords are commonly used in various forms of rock music including hard rock, metal, and punk, as the sound of a power chord is not dissonant when distorted, for example by a fuzzbox when played on an electric guitar.
Examples of power chords with C as the root note are C4-F4, C4-G4, C4-F4-C5, and C4-G4-C5 (where the numbers after each note name signify the octave).

Scale and Chord Theory for Guitar
Notice that the only major scale without sharps or flats in is that built on C. The only minor scale without sharps or flats is that of A. Therefore these scales contain the same notes.
Major triads are made by taking the first, third and fifth notes of their associated scale.
In fact, chords on the guitar are usually arranged so that the root note is placed first (reading from left to right).

The next diagram shows the chords that are in the key of G. As you can see, the G is the I, the C is the IV, and the D7 is the V in the I- IV - V progression.
Every chord is based on a specific formula which relates back to the major scale after which it is named.
As shown earlier, the formula for a major chord is 1 3 5 hence a G major (GM) chord consists of the first, third, and fifth notes of the G major scale, G B D (refer to the circle of fifths chart).

 Major Seven Chord
Recall that chords come in two basic parts, a letter name (C, C#, etc.) also known as a root note (tonic, 1), and a descriptive part that abbreviates the name of the chord (is a short-hand for all the intervals of each distinct note from the root note).
We can see here that the chords in the major scale with a major 7th chord are the 1 and 4.
In the harmonic minor scale, the maj7 chord is the bVImaj7.
