The obvious question is whether superheroes deserve their continued hold on our wallets and dreams, or whether they represent the triumph of schlock culture.
The superhero story is as capable of speaking to adult concerns as any other genre of fantasy.
My objection is not that superhero comics are unethical, or that they don't teach straightforwardly, or that they don't teach approved ethics.

These are the pre-cursors of DC Comics recent decision to reinvent the Blue Beetle, a superhero whose alter-ego used to be white and is now a Hispanic teenager, or Martha Washington, Dark Horse Comics' fl hero from Chicago's notorious Cabrini Green housing projects.
Like most red-blooded males I'll be saying "no" because it is a character I like but I don't identify with, but I can imagine the outcry if they tried to portray an established mainstream hero like Batman or Superman homosexual.
Only when a superhero is presented with a real challenge (e.g., city-eating monsters or the darker parts of human nature) do superhero stories get interesting.

Many female heroes that have had their own series were, unfortunately, copies of successful male heroes.
Female knock-offs of established male super-heroes are like photocopies; fuzzy, ill-defined and often unappealing.
However, my short list of such comics includes "Give Me Liberty" (1991) and the various "Martha Washington" (1994, 1995, 1998) stories by Frank Miller/ Dave Gibbons, the last "Captain Confederacy" (1991-2) mini-series, and "Kalla Dreadstar" (1995) by Peter David.

posted 04-28-2005 01:52 AM Maybe Marvel's restocking the larder: most of those women are probably headed for grisly ends and a long nap in a refrigerator in order to motivate the male heroes to fly into a rage and beat the tar out of somebody.
In general I like reading about characters (including some superheroes) who belong to their creators, not to corporations who change them around to suit the needs of marketing rather than the needs of the story.
Not that there's anything wrong with deploying any kind of property, including intellectual property, to maximise return on your investment, but it doesn't usually produce the kind of stories I personally like to read.
