 Proofs in Mathematics
Thus mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true.
A proof is defined as a derivation of one proposition from another.
The proof then may present a convincing argument of the correctness of a fact that, in itself, may be true or false.

 Mathematical Proofs
To see how mathematical properties are different, we can think about Pythagoras' rule for right triangles: the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
A mathematical proof is an argument that begins with a set of postulates or assumptions and proceeds to a conclusion by agreed methods of argument.
Mathematical proofs, however, are important in designing and reasoning about data structures, algorithms, programs, and other computational concepts that can be defined abstractly in the same way as numbers and triangles.

Amazon.com: Proofs and Refutations: The Logic of Mathematical Discovery: Books: Imre Lakatos,John Worrall,Elie Zahar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Proofs and Refutations is essential reading for all those interested in the methodology, the philosophy and the history of mathematics.
The proof provided for the four colour theorm which was derved in the 1970's relied heavily on the sue of computers and brute force technqiues.
The reason that Lakatos equates proofs and refutation in his title is his contention that it is the refutations that are developed that show mathematicians the deficiencies and indeed teh possibilites in their theories.

Science Fair Projects - List of mathematical theorems
In some fields, theorem can be considered as a courtesy title, given to major results, although with a content that would not satisfy a mathematician.
No attempt is made here to comment on that aspect of usage: this is a list of results known as theorems.
Most of the results do come from mathematics, but there are others from theoretical physics, economics and so on.

Amazon.com: Mathematical Thinking: Problem-Solving and Proofs (2nd Edition): Books: John P. D'Angelo,Douglas B. West   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This survey of both discrete and continuous mathematics focuses on the logical thinking skills necessary to understand and communicate fundamental ideas and proofs in mathematics, rather than on rote symbolic manipulation.
Coverage begins with the fundamentals of mathematical language and proof techniques (such as induction); then applies them to easily-understood questions in elementary number theory and counting; then develops additional techniques of proofs via fundamental topics in discrete and continuous mathematics.
For anyone interested in learning how to understand and write mathematical proofs, or a reference for college professors and high school teachers of mathematics.

 Neural Nets by Kevin Gurney
The notes available online have have formed the basis of a book to be published later this year by UCL Press Ltd. UK.
This book has been written in the same spirit as the notes in that basic concepts, techniques and ideas are given priority over lengthy mathematical proofs and technical detail.
However, the book contains a significant increase in material, including sections on ART, RBFs, PCA, digital nodes, alternative views of network function, applications etc. It has also revised those areas which were not as clear as they might have been (my own opinion plus feedback from users of the notes).
