 Mathematical Sciences
Mathematics and computation, because they attempt to describe the world we live in and our relationship to it, have always been critical to the evolution of civilization.
Exploring the relationship of the mathematical sciences to other areas of inquiry, new technologies, and the basic issues raised by them gives credibility to the fact that the mathematical sciences are a lively, growing, vital force in our lives.

 … Ice Age Theories
Even if the details of the theory were wrong, the presence of the same frequencies as those present in the orbits of the planets was a strong reason to revive the astronomical theory.
A review of the theories published in 1993 included a "short list" of nine different "groups" of models, and yet every one of these theories was contradicted by the simple observation that the 100 kyr peak was narrow.
It may be the fact that the insolation theory predicted the correct values of the frequencies that leads to its tenacity in holding the minds of paleoclimatologists.

Rather it is a consequence of the objectivity of merit in mathematics.
Mathematical logic reached a mature level in the 1920s, and subsequent developments relevant to making policy arguments mathematical have been mainly technical.
Unfortunately, mathematical logic as it developed until the late 1970s is inadequate for arguments in the social sciences or about the common sense world, and it has been applied mainly to studying the foundations of mathematics rather than to realizing Leibniz's goal.

Mathematical works do consist of proofs, just as poems do consist of characters.
Pure mathematics consists entirely of such asseverations as that, if such and such a proposition is true of anything, then such and such another proposition is true of that thing...
Thus mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true.

 18: Category theory, homological algebra
Category theory, a comparatively new field of mathematics, provides a universal framework for discussing fields of algebra and geometry.
While the general theory and certain types of categories have attracted considerable interest, the area of homological algebra has proved most fruitful in areas of ring theory, group theory, and algebraic topology.
A full, wide-ranging text on category theory is by Borceux, Francis: "Handbook of categorical algebra", 3 vol (1: Basic category theory; 2: Categories and structures; 3: Categories of sheaves) (Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications, 50-2.) Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1994.

Introducing Logic via Turing Machines   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
A curious situation has arisen today in the undergraduate curriculum with many computer science majors learning the fundamentals of logic from a memorized list of truth tables and rules of inference, without regard to the original problems whose solutions involved the logic that would become part of the programmable computer.
Current discrete mathematics textbooks, which often cover combinatorics, deductive reasoning and predicate logic, present the material as a fast-paced compendium of facts and formulae, with only passing mention of the original work and pioneering solutions that eventually found resolution through the modern concepts of induction, recursion and algorithm.
For implementation in the classroom, introduction to the relevant historical material should begin early in the course, with a brief description of Hilbert's problem list, its effect on the development of mathematics, and the significance of the decision problem.

 EINSTEIN'S LEGACY
Although he is regarded as one of the most brilliant mathematical physicists of the century, Einstein thought of himself as much as a philosopher as a scientist.
Certainly his theories relating matter, energy, space, time and gravity have guided much of the work in theoretical physics since 1905.
But Newton's theory of gravitation was a "descriptive" theory; it didn't explain how the force of gravity was exerted, a fact that has an interesting parallel in Einstein's work and which remains a hot topic for future research.
