 Wikipedia: Toronto, Ontario
Located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto was originally a term of indeterminate geographical location, designating the approximate area of the future city of Toronto on maps dating to the late 17th and early 18th century.
European settlement in central Canada was quite limited before 1788, amounting to only a few families, but it began growing quickly in the aftermath of the American Revolution.
Governor Simcoe was concerned with opening military communications between the settlements in the southwest of Upper Canada (notably Niagara-on-the-Lake, then known as Newark), and those to the east (Kingston, then points east to the border with Lower Canada).

Canada has been acting like a homeowner who spends an ever-increasing amount of his budget on groceries and health-club memberships, ignoring his knocking furnace and leaking roof.
In 1960, Canada's federal, provincial and municipal governments between them were devoting about 20 per cent of their budgets to bricks and mortar.

That's the strategy behind the Mayors for Peace project - an international effort which began with the mayor of one city, Hiroshima, Japan, who in 1982 said "never again" to the suffering his own town endured.

To the suggestion by counsel for the commission that she should have separated her religious convictions from the performance of her duties as mayor, Haskett responded that her life was “tied up in my relationship with God” and that she could not separate herself from it.
Following precedents set by the Supreme Court of Canada, she ruled in October 1997 that the mayor’s rights to freedom of religion and of expression as purportedly guaranteed in section 2 of the Charter were subordinate to the equality rights of homosexuals in section 15.
The mayor then announced that she would take an unpaid, three-week leave of absence pending the upcoming municipal election, and asked the city to allocate the money saved from her salary to offset the $10,000 in damages awarded to Hudler.

Canada seems to be a magnet for bizarre statist schemes, such as the Parliamentary resolution to end child poverty by the year 2000.
Maybe Canada is the model UN nation: the haven of the poor, the oppressed, and protector of minorities.
In Canada, the UN undoubtedly sees the fantasy of a compassionate society, where the "poor" and "underprivileged" can find "dignity," where minorities can find "justice" against their cruel "oppressors," where women can find liberation through the state, and where children are protected from the violence of white males.
