The Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of Victoria in Australia.
The Assembly has 88 members, each coming from a single-member electorate.

The member herself does a service by raising this kind of question in the Legislature and she has my full assurance that we will undertake as many of those activities as possible to ensure that this problem is overcome.
I would point out to the honourable member that when I assumed responsibility for this ministry there were no funds at all, absolutely none, allocated to community preventive counselling, whether it was for the battered woman or her children or the offender.
The member told the committee that the reason this amendment should not pass was that the decision to change the size of a board was much too important to be made by a simple majority.

In 1890, he was elected a member of the new legislative council and was colonial secretary in Forrest's (q.v.) ministry from December 1890 to October 1892, when he resigned to become president of the legislative council.
At the general election held in 1856 he was elected a member of the legislative assembly for Geelong and advocated a public bank of issue and the encouragement of immigration.
Smith had been elected to the legislative council in 1851, and in 1856, when responsible government came in, he was elected a member of the legislative assembly as one of the representatives of Melbourne.

She was the first (and as of 2005 the only) female member of the royal family to actually serve in the military, though other royal women have been given honorary ranks.
However, in 1997 she and other members of the Royal Family were perceived as cold and unfeeling when they were seen not to participate in the public outpouring of grief at the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
The Queen, or her Governors-General in the realms outside of Britain, also gives a speech at the annual State Opening of Parliament, outlining the government's legislative agenda for the year, but the speech is written by ministers.

I think the member for Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford, who is a beauty -- there's no question that he's a beauty; he uses that term regularly -- has brought to light a very important weakness in Mr Sergio's private member's bill, and I'm referring to subsection 1(7).
I heard members across make reference to land developers and so on, trying to insinuate that there is a closeness between members of the House.
The member from Trinity-Spadina: I have the deepest respect for his commitment to the constituent group that he speaks to and I do support his genuineness and sincerity because I know where he's coming from.

I think it would be terrific, given the statements that have been made, if she knows that all members of this House, the Fox family and the members in the gallery send her their thoughts, their prayers and their best wishes and that we're standing with her in her very difficult battle.
However, I believe the real story for her is a very distinguished 14-year legislative career where she met every challenge put in front of her with her own style, always doing her best, working hard for her constituents, her party and the things that she believes in.
I am sure, on behalf of the members here on both sides, to thank her for demonstrating the commitment, effort and ability that any member would be proud to be remembered for during their time here.

Neither the outgoing Coalition parties nor the ALP won even half the seats in the 88-member Legislative Assembly, so the choice of which of those minority groupings should govern was made by the three independent MLAs in rural seats, which were previously Coalition strongholds.
Don Chipp, their overwhelming concern to strengthen the legislative and scrutinizing functions of the Senate was an approach in perfect alignment with continuing efforts to make the Senate a stronger institution.
Mr Hamer also noted that, with two-thirds of their members from the House, major parties take their direction from action there, and again suggested that the Senate would perform a better function if senators aspired not to be Ministers, but to head Committees undertaking major work, and to gain public and peer recognition for it.

Since the ALP Government gained majority support in both houses in 2001 the electoral legislation has been changed and a proportional representation system will apply for the next Upper House poll due in November 2006.
Nevertheless it is worth realizing that the issue of PR for elections to the Victorian Parliament has had a surprisingly long history.
A life member of the PRSA’s Victorian Branch, the late Mr Roger Donegan of Mont Albert, had obtained for the Society some interesting extracts from debates in Victoria’s colonial parliament that he obtained from various volumes of the official record, the Victorian Parliamentary Debates (more recently known as "Hansard").

The Victorian Branch of the ALP was the strongest in its history.
In the Legislative Assembly in Victoria the Labor Party held the greatest number of seats in its history as it did in the Victorian Legislative Council.
Further, to be a member of an ALP Industrial Group, one also had to be a financial member of the Labor Party.

To get the necessary numbers at the special Victorian conference, the federal executive, in clear disregard of the party rules, decided in effect that union delegates to the ALP federal conference need not be members of the Labor Party.
In a further step, to deprive the Victorian executive of its right of appeal to the party's federal conference, the federal executive postponed the scheduled forthcoming federal conference from January 17 to March 14, 1955, so that it took place after the special Victorian conference called for February 27.
The Victorian state executive elected at the 1954 conference declared the special conference called by the federal executive for February 27 to be "bogus" - which, according to the rules of the Labor Party, it clearly was.

The question is as to what flag should fly in front of the Parliament of Scotland, the Assembly of Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly and over the buildings housing the official administrations of these.
This should be a matter for each body to chose for itself (for instance the Scots should have the right to change their saltire or its background to pink if they so wish).
Because the electoral roll is compiled in November, but the elections to the community council are in September, this means you must have been living in the community council's area for between 10 and 22 months in order to be eligible to stand.
