Quark models, first proposed in 1964 independently by Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig (who called quarks "aces"), describe the known hadrons as composed of valence quarks and/or antiquarks, tightly bound by the color force, which is mediated by gluons.
Ordinary mesons (bosons) contain a valence quark and a valence antiquark, and include the pions, the kaons and many other types of mesons.

 physics - Meson
In particle physics, a meson is a strongly interacting boson, that is, it is a hadron with integral spin.
Pseudoscalar mesons (spin 0) have the lowest rest energy, where the quark and antiquark have opposite spin, and then the vector mesons (spin 1), where the quark and antiquark have parallel spin.
Mesons were originally predicted as carriers of the force that bind protons and neutrons together.

How Things Work - Medical Imaging and Radiation
The list of fundamental particles--particles that are not known to be composed of other particles--is relatively short.
The list of fundamental particles also includes 6 types of leptons, which are given the names "electron", "electron neutrino", "muon", "muon neutrino", "tau", and "tau neutrino".
The list of subatomic particles that can be formed from the fundamental particles is extremely long and listing it here wouldn't be very enlightening.

Citebase - Hybrid mesons from lattice QCD
Recent lattice simulation studies of heavy-quark hybrid mesons in which the quark and antiquark are bound together by an excited gluon field are summarized.
Since gluons in QCD are interacting fundamental constituents just as quarks are, we expect that in addition to mesons made from a quark and an antiquark, there should also be glueballs and hybrids (bound states of quarks, antiquarks and gluons).
We use lattice methods to evaluate from first principles the spectrum of hybrid mesons produced by gluonic excitations in quenched QCD with quark masses near the strange quark mass.

 Nuclear Mesons
Given the results of those studies [WeW81] [NaW79] of the effects of chiral symmetry it seems a reasonable extension of QCD, and a more tractable problem, to treat mesons, and in particular pions, as the carriers of the nuclear force.

If mesons are truly the carriers of the nuclear force, modern calculations based on a model of meson exchange predict that the pion field in the nucleus is enhanced by the collective action of the many nucleons in the nucleus.

 Chemistry - Pion
In particle physics, pion (short for the Greek pi meson = 'P middle') is the collective name for three subatomic particles discovered in 1947: π
Pions have zero spin and are composed of first generation quarks.
After theoretical work by Hideki Yukawa in 1935 had predicted the existence of mesons as the carrier particles of the strong nuclear force, charged pions were found experimentally in 1947 by a team led by Cecil Powell.

His research related to results from Fermilab experiment E272 on Primakoff and diffractive production of mesons constituted the foundation for his Habilitation Degree, received from the Institute for Nuclear Research in Cracow in 1987.

Later, as a member of Fermilab experiment E781, he was involved with the new determination of the radiative width of the a2 meson.
