On May 23rd, 2003 the list was reset and restarted with a new beginning.

Ken Reeves, a senior meteorologist at the AccuWeather Center in State College, Pa., said that when the Pacific is cooler, it "essentially drives the storm track further to the east in the Atlantic Ocean basin."
John Jensenius, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, said his group has been concerned for years that a strong hurricane could strike New England's coast.

The requirement for accreditation is seen in areas of work where meteorologists, and those working in closely related sciences such as hydrology and physical oceanography, are providing services, usually for those who are not specialists in these subjects.
Where academic or professional courses are quoted which are not included in the Society's list of approved courses, the Accreditation Board will ask the organisation responsible for the course to provide the details of their syllabus, timetables, examination papers, their methods of assessment and available evidence of external evaluation of the course.
A list of newly accredited Chartered Meteorologists is published in the Society's newsletter: if no objections are raised in writing to the Accreditation Board within two months of publication of this list the accreditations automatically become effective.

Ok, We have now reviewed the particular categories that were designed specifically to help both the meteorologists as well as the general public better understand a particular storms capability to bring a generalized expectation of devastation to an area of greatest impact.
That's why meteorologists list the most intense hurricanes by barometric pressure rather than recorded or estimated wind speeds.

A group of Ohio TV meteorologists contacted The Science & Environmental Policy Project in early October, shortly after the Administration hosted an invited gathering of 100 television meteorologists at the White House and appealed to them to promote global warming to their broadcast audiences.
Since the White House had broken ground by presenting its political agenda to the TV meteorologists, and since some weathercasters reported being pressured by their news directors to attend, the Ohio group felt a need to make an overt statement to avoid any public misperceptions about their scientific views.

The difficult task of compiling a list of the 20th century's top global weather, water, and climate events was undertaken by the scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
After careful study of weather reports, NOAA climatologists, meteorologists, and hydrologists released their list in December, 1999.
Based on their tally, Thirteen Online has created a map that provides statistics about some of the storms considered to be the worst of the 20th century.

In the North Atlantic, there are 21 names in the list.
Apparently, meteorologists did not think they would ever have need to come up with names starting with Q, U, V, Y or Z, as they do in the Pacific.
