Military strategy - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Military strategy deals with the planning and conduct of campaigns, the movement and disposition of forces, and the deception of the enemy.
In the environment of the grand strategy, the military component is largely reduced to operational strategy -- the planning and control of large military units such as corps and divisions.
More so than in previous wars, military strategy in World War I was directed by the grand strategy of a coalition of nations; the Entente on one side and the Central Powers on the other.

The division was originally an organizational structure under the corps to assist in command and control of various regiments and brigades.
Usually the direct organization of the division consists of one to four brigades or regiments of the combat arm of the division along with a brigade or regiment of combat support (usually artillery) and a number of direct-reporting battalions for various specialized support tasks (often reconnaissance and combat engineers).
Two divisions usually compose a corps and each division is composed of about 3 maneuver brigades, an aviation brigade, an engineer brigade, and a division artillery along with a number of smaller specialized units.
