Minor planet is the official term for asteroids and trans-Neptunian objects.
If a minor planet produces coma it is called a comet (though conversely not all comets are classified as minor planets).
Minor planets are divided into groups and families based on their orbital characteristics.

An asteroid is an example of a minor planet (or planetoid), which are much smaller than planets.
The term "minor planet" (or "planetoid") carries no strong suggestion about the composition of the object or its general location in the solar system, and some argue that not every minor planet should be called an "asteroid".
As of August 5, 2004, 85,117 "minor planets" had had their orbits calculated well enough to be given official numbers and 11,559 of these had been officially named.

The planets, most of the satellites of the planets and the asteroids revolve around the Sun in the same direction, in nearly circular orbits.
Satellites of the planets, comets, asteroids, meteoroids, and the interplanetary medium constitute the remaining 0.015%.
The terrestrial planets are the four innermost planets in the solar system, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

The minor planets in the lists which follow will be much brighter at their 2005 apparitions than at their average distances at maximum elongation.
Planet 5660 1974 MA is brighter 2005 July 28 at magnitude 14.5 than until the year 2036 when the next close approach under comparable observing conditions occurs.
These lists have been prepared by an examination of the maximum elongation circumstances of minor planets computed by the author for all years through 2060 with a full perturbation program written by Dr. John Reed, and to whom he expresses his thanks.

Minor planet observations are being made at the USNO Flagstaff Station with an 8-inch transit telescope with a CCD camera operated in scan mode.
All results are published, usually within a few weeks after observation, in the Minor Planet Center (MPC) circulars.
So the observing list was expanded to include several other categories of objects and projects, including minor planets of particular scientific interest, mass--determination candidates, objects which can be used to improved the dynamical reference frame, and MPC ``Critical List'' objects --- minor planets whose orbits and positions are especially in need of improvement.

When Did the asteroids Become Minor Planets?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The recent controversy over whether Pluto should be given a minor planet number and possibly be demoted from the ranks of the major planets has made me wonder about the similar controversy that occurred 150 years ago.
At the time the description 'minor planet' began to be used, the most widely disseminated values for the diameters of the first four asteroids discovered were Ceres, 2613 km; Pallas, 3380 km; Juno, 2290 km; and Vesta, "not more than 383 km" (Hughes 1994).
Almost immediately after the term 'minor planet' was adopted a new determination of the diameters of the first three asteroid produced values only 10% of those previously adopted, and much smaller than today's accepted values.

The provisional designations are based on the date of discovery and are assigned by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) according to a well defined formula that involves the year of discovery, two letters and, if need be, further digits (for example 1989 AC or 2002 LM60).
When a Minor Planet receives a permanent number, the discoverer of the Minor Planet is invited to suggest a name for it.

 Asteroid Introduction
Asteroids are rocky and metallic objects that orbit the Sun but are too small to be considered planets.
One theory suggests that they are the remains of a planet that was destroyed in a massive collision long ago.
In fact, if the estimated total mass of all asteroids was gathered into a single object, the object would be less than 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) across -- less than half the diameter of our Moon.
