Misnomer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A misnomer is a misleading name, often idiomatic.
An older name being retained as the thing named evolved (e.g., pencil lead, tin cans, fixed income markets, mince meat pie).
The deeper point that disparate fields of mathematics are connected in non-obvious ways remains valid, but designating the "fundamental theorem of algebra" a misnomer is debatable.

The third species of wolf is the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) which lives in Africa and Ethiopia which has previously been classified as a jackal until DNA research proved it to be a true wolf.
The gray wolf, commonly referred to as tundra wolf or timber wolf, is the largest of all wild canids, although its size varies noticeably throughout its large range including Minnesota, Michigan and Montana in the United States and many remote areas of Canada, Alaska and Europe.

At the close of this article is a list of weapons, if you will, used in what is known now as "the war called peace." They are weapons which derive from a modern-day science called the science of psychopolitics.
Now, on that list of psychopolitical weapons which I included at the end of this article, you will find that I stated a couple of conclusions at the end of the listing.
Now, on the psychopolitical weapons list, Item 14 is "Criminality and Legal Entanglement." Since this is a war called peace, there are no tanks that will roll down the street--not now--with swastikas or rising suns or hammers and sickles painted on their sides.

We only add, by way of a general view, a list of all the ecumenical councils of the Graeco-Roman church, with a brief account of their character and work.
The condemnation of a departed pope as a heretic by an ecumenical council is so inconsistent with the claims of papal infallibility, that Romish historians have tried their utmost to dispute the fact, or to weaken its force by sophistical pleading.

This idea has contributed to a whole lot of confusion and disappointment for many who have first intercourse, and wonder where the fireworks and trumpets were, or why it wasn't all they thought it would be.

The Great Misnomers section begins with a narrated overview of how the field of Egyptology has been tainted by the often racist views of many early Egyptologists of the 19th and 20th century who denied evidence of Ancient Egypt's African origin and its major contribution to world civilization.
The narration is supported by quotes from ancient writers such as Diodorus of Sicily, Herodotus and Isocrates, all of whom traveled to Ancient Egypt and wrote about both the race of the Acient Egyptians and their many great contributions.
The narration and quotes are followed by a list of 20 Great Misnomers.

TAC 12: Great Misnomers No. 2: The Arrochar Alps
We are of course adrift in a sea of misnomers here, for any selfrespecting schoolgirl knows that whilst "Alp" strictly refers to a grassy mountain meadow inhabited by Suchard-producing cows and yodelling, flugelhom-blowing peasants, the word has long come to mean the jaggy snowwhite peaks themselves, domicile of Jean-Claude Killy, Jean-Baptiste Lafonde and David Vine.
This is, after all, the late twentieth century: a babyboomer has just organised a gig on the White House steps, Last Tango in Paris has been on the TV, and women have even been admitted, however tokenistically, into the Steatopygous Men's Club.
And finally, while we're on the subject, there is of course the smaller-scale misnomer within the "Alps" themselves: the old chestnut of The Cobbler merely being a nickname for something called "Ben Arthur".

Though we are all aware of the arbitrary nature of the linguistic sign (Saussure, 1969: 101), we still expect specialised terms to denote specific concepts more rigorously and to be anything but misleading.
Assuredly the new term refers to the new size that can be hoped to be just right for the firm, but one may wonder if it is felt to be right by those who lose their jobs in the process.

And his dispute with de Vaux over the dating of a pot with Herodian script, which de Vaux assigned for sound archaeological reasons to Period Ib and Cross to Period II from paleography (as I recall) is another terrible example of conflict between archaeology and Cross's paleography.
I am convinced (with Doudna) that the transition from "Hasmonean" to "Herodian" scripts took place much earlier than Cross allows and that these terms are misnomers.
However, I agree with you that for all the script forms to be representative of a single generation seems unlikely.
