 Brytenwealda - Wikipedia
When a Bretwalda ruled over a larger kingdom, such as a Mercian ruler over East Anglia, the relationship would have been more equal than in the case of a larger kingdom ruling over a smaller one, as in the case of Mercia and Hwicce.
The original lists of Bretwaldas did not contain the kings Ethelbald and Offa of Mercia, but in all probability they were considered overlords in their time and are included above.
Bede does not record Ethelbald or Offa as Ethelbald lived at the same time as Bede (Bede commented little on current affairs in his Historia Ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum) and Offa was after Bede's time (Bede died in 735).

Bernicia and Deira were first united by Aethelfrith, a king of Bernicia who conquered Deira around the year 604.
He was, however, himself defeated by an alliance of the exiled king of Gwynedd, Cadwallon ap Cadfan and Penda, king of Mercia, at the Battle of Hatfield Chase in 633.
In 655, Penda launched a massive invasion of Northumbria, aided by the sub-king of Deira, Aethelwald, but suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of an inferior force under Oswiu, Oswald's successor, at the Battle of Winwaed.

Northumbria was founded around 604 by the union of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia under Aethelfrith of Bernicia.
Bernicia covered lands north of the Tees, whilst Deira corresponded roughly to modern-day Yorkshire, and the new kingdom stretched from the Humber to the Forth.
After the invasion of the south of the kingdom by Vikings and Danes in 866 (forming the Viking kingdom of York, or Jorvik) Anglo-Saxon Northumbria shrank to land north of the Tees only.
