The monitor was dubbed by an observing person "a cheesebox on a raft" and that tells well their appearance.

 Royal Australian Navy Gun Plot
The navy was not too sure of how to deal with them, nor was it in a position to effectively apply any of the usual "remedies", after all, who else could handle the engines?.
Conditions for engineers in the navy were undoubtably poor, and in a bid to improve the situation, the Admiralty, by Order in Council dated l0th July 1837, granted engineers Warrant rank, thereby elevating their status to that of the Civil Officers of the period, such as Masters, Pursers, Surgeons, and Chaplains.
The first successful water tube boilers made their appearance in the navy in a modest way in the same year, but the main generator of steam at this period was the cylindrical, return tube type (Scotch), some of which were double ended, (from 1874) and all were manually coal fired.

When the threat posed by the Royal Navy during the War of 1812 became overwhelming, the previously wide-ranging and victorious American frigates were eventually blockaded in their ports, protected by the guns of Army fortifications and by the wiles of still more private inventors and their crude but innovative underwater mines.
Navy officers sat on the joint boards that planned these Army system, and along with the Army ran the nation's lighthouse system, vital for coastal navigation and potentially useful for homeland defense.
Navy officers sat on the usual joint homeland defense boards, state naval militias were formed, a few more monitors were commissioned, Naval Districts for coastal defense were created, and a new harbor and coastal defense weapons-the submarine-was deployed.

The Royal Navy's discipline and food in the age of sail may not deserve quite as much rehabilitation as he gives them, but on the other hand, he is frank about the limitations of British warship design, poor Victorian gunnery and lack of preparations for antisubmarine warfare between the world wars.
What jumps right out at you from the beginning is how deeply the Royal Navy which, in the nineteenth century, could justly claim to "rule the waves," is itself rooted in lawlessness, brutality and the greed of the pirate.
Indeed, it is Herman's contention that Britain' navy made her though what also comes clearly into focus is the fact that external events and the special combination of features that conjoined in the English nation also made the navy.

World Battleships List: US Civil War Monitors
Several of these monitors were renamed during 1869, then returned to their original names within a few weeks.
They were nominally "repaired" as "New Navy" monitors, but in fact the old wooden ships were sold to the shipbuilders as partial payment for the new iron ships, and were scrapped.
Evidently had much better compartmentalization than other monitors of the time, as the one that was mined took three minutes to sink (vs. 15-30 seconds for other classes), and one compartment of the sunken ship did not flood for nearly an hour.

 Naming Ships - Navy Ships
While the Navy has attempted to be systematic in naming its ships, in recent years it seems there has been a complete breakdown in any attempt to sustain a systematic practice in the name categories for ship types.
But as the 600-ship Navy has evolved into the 300-ship Navy, it would seem that a presumption has arisen that one should be on a first-name basis with each ship of the fleet, and that no further introductions should be required.
As the Navy is increasingly called upon to operate in a joint environment, the services's increasingly confusing ship nomenclature will only compound interoperability problems [indeed, one may wonder how many Army and Air Force personnel are aware that there is, in principle, some system by which the Navy names its various ships].
