I remember only a few years ago when Macedonia was the focus of intense anxiety as yet another civil war in the former Yugoslavia seemed imminent.
A war in Macedonia would be unlikely to remain a civil one since the country is one of the most fought over pieces of land in the Balkans, variously claimed as Southern Serbia, Eastern Albania or Western Bulgaria.
The Greeks, too, have their quarrel with Macedonia, fearing the tiny republic of two million might lay claim to the Greek region of Macedonia (around Thessaloniki) and objecting to its very name as a misappropriation of Hellenic history.
