Korea is a formerly unified country, situated on the KoreanPeninsula in north East Asia adjacent to China in the west and Russia in the north.
Korea was divided into two occupation zones effectively starting on September8, 1945, with the United Statesadministering the southern half of the peninsula and the Soviet Uniontaking over the area north of the 38th parallel.
Initial hopes for a unified, independent Korea quickly evaporated as the politics of the Cold War and domestic opposition to the trusteeship plan resulted in the 1948 establishment of two separate governments in the North and the South with diametrically opposed political,economic, and social systems.
