 Everest Almanac: Measuring Mountains
Called Chomolungma ("goddess mother of the world") in Tibet and Sagarmatha ("goddess of the sky") in Nepal, Mount Everest once went by the pedestrian name of Peak XV among Westerners.
That was before surveyors established that it was the highest mountain on Earth, a fact that came as something of a surprise—Peak XV had seemed lost in the crowd of other formidable Himalayan peaks, many of which gave the illusion of greater height.
The mountain received its official name in 1865 in honor of Sir George Everest, the British Surveyor General from 1830—1843 who had mapped the Indian subcontinent.

We, as responsible citizen of Nepal, are worried very much about the recent decision of the Government of Nepal to open up more than 100 peaks for international climbers.
This is one of the latest irresponsible behaviour of the government towards the already over exploited mountains resources by the so called "Mountaineering heroes " in the past.
The people of the mountain will have to pay a high environmental and social cost for a such irresponsible action of the government and it deserves a strong condemnation from all the people of all walks of lives.
