  Middle Ages :: King Arthur
He is the central character in Arthurian legends (known as the Matter of Britain), although there is disagreement about whether Arthur, or a model for him, ever actually existed and in the earliest mentions and Welsh texts he is never given the title "king".
His power base was probably in either Wales, Cornwall or the west of what would become England, but controversy over the centre of his power and the extent and kind of power he wielded continues to rage.
This may be related to legends where Arthur is depicted as the leader of the Wild Hunt, a folk motif that is also recorded in Brittany, France, and Germany.

This may be related to legends where Arthur is depicted as the leader of the Wild_Hunt, a folk motif that is also recorded in Brittany, France, and Germany; Roger_S._Loomis has listed a number of these instances (Loomis 1972).
In Season Nine of the science-fiction television series Stargate_SG-1, Arthur and Arthurian legend, particularly Merlin, are intrinsic to the plot of the season; specifically, Merlin is an Ancient who may have taught Arthur how to Ascend at Glastonbury Tor and hid the wealth of the Knights in an elaborate, puzzle-laden chamber.

The first, by Williams, is a lengthy history of the development of the Arthurian legend, discussing the entry of the various great themes (i.e., courtly love, the Grail, etc.) and how it affected the legend that had existed to that point.
The first listed, the "short" or "non-cyclic prose Lancelot," is a very interesting point in the development of the legend: Lancelot is not yet involved in the Grail quest (indeed, it is implied that it has already occurred by the time he comes to King Arthur's court).

Delannoy's updating of the legend of Tristan and Isolde, with a screenplay by Jean Cocteau, is for all its brilliance nonetheless tainted by racist ideas that made it acceptable to the Nazi occupiers of wartime France.

 Amazon.com: Excalibur (1981) : Video   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
This lush retelling of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is a dark and engrossing tale.
Director John Boorman blends several variations of the legend together, combining some characters to fit the needs of the story, with strong battle sequences (not for the squeamish) and a compelling (and infamous) love triangle (Cherie Lunghi is gorgeous- what was she doing in the video of Level 42's hit Something About You, though?).
This is a violent and disturbing movie, but is very high class and enough technicsal merit where it was mainstream at the time of its release and got a kind of mainstream/ kind of cult following later on.

 Review of King Author
The images of King Arthur and his colorful cohorts are readily identifiable to anyone even moderately attuned to American popular culture: the nobility of Arthur and his knights; the betrayal of Lancelot; the quest for the Grail; the mystery of Merlin and the duplicity of Morgan Le Fay.
Despite their original source in arcane legend, movies about Arthur and his exploits make for the stuff craved by American audiences, encompassing violence, grisly combat, betrayal, honor, sex and redemption.
King Arthur, it would seem, was made for the movies, a fact most evident in the wide variety of films that have been made about Arthur and the legends that surround him.

Although Arthurian legends have roots all over Western Europe and can be traced back to pre-Christian times, the 12th century French writer Chretien de Troyes is credited with inventing Arthurian literature as we know it.
Although Chretien created the basis for the legends we still love today, he did not invent them himself; he drew on tales he was told that have origins as far back as human memory can go.
