Saturday Night Live TV show sketches - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tales of Ribaldry was a series of sketches starring Jon Lovitz as Victorian era dandy Evelyn Quince, presenting supposedly "racy, randy, ribald!" tales, presented initially as "bodice rippers" which, to the host's clear and vocal dismay, develop into rather straightforward, "not very ribald at all!" sexual encounters between consenting adults.
The sketch benefitted greatly from the formula of Mike Myers's Wayne's World: Jarret, the always enthusiastic and childlike host (similar to Wayne), is offset by his awkward co-host; the format is all DIY and low-budget; and the guests are all friends of the host or co-host.
Every sketch, Tyler walks in and the receptionist asks, "What is it this time, Tyler?" Tyler proceeds to explain how some implausible object has wedged its way into his anus (although in the Jack Black/Neil Young episode, Tyler actually has a gift-wrapped watermelon stuck to his penis).

Still, the SNL movie juggernaut foraged on, though not even Lorne Michaels or Paramount would touch Julia Sweeney's awful "comedy," based on her androgynous SNL character.
A Night at the Roxbury, which helped propel Will Ferrell to stardom, was the first, though it immediately dates itself, not least because the actual Roxbury nightclub closed soon after.

I guess in small doses this could be OK, but in sketch after sketch, I was struck by how narrowly varied his characters were and how the few sketches that weren't painfully unfunny were thanks to other performers or some funny line that didn't really need him to deliver it.
Unfortunately, too often the funniest parts of sketches were the contributions of others, like Phil Hartman as a PBS fundraiser during an after school special in which all the kids in the high school seem to be gay.
A pair of sketches that were performed at the dress rehearsal, but were cut for the actual telecast, are included, featuring one with white record executives giving advice to a rap act and a lame Weekend Update piece with Spade as a UN translator.

Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live is an oral history of the show, compiled from interviews with cast members and writers including Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Steve Martin, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, and others.
Yet like the people chronicled in Live From New York, virtually all these comics—born around the time McKinley was considered a promising presidential candidate—never forgot one single grudge of their showbiz lives.
The minute that performers forget that true comedy is based on both surprise AND recognition, and that recognition requires that comedy arise from reality, they become the hack crap artists that have stunk up SNL for decades.
