The growing twelfth and thirteenth-century emphasis on armor in the municipal charters was no doubt affected by this change, although manuscript illustrations would indicate that both styles continued in use by Christian warriors to the end of the Middle Ages, and in equestrian circles both have been maintained to the present day.
