Pitchfork Feature: Top 100 Albums of the 1990s
It occurred to me that, since we have the means, it might be worthwhile to revisit these lists every few years and see how they change.
So, over the past few months, the current Pitchfork staff convened to tabulate their revised individual lists, with the ultimate goal of presenting an updated list of 1990s records that have remained essential into the first part of the new decade.
A big surprise for me was just how different this new list is from the old one, and how many more albums we all felt deserved inclusion that, unfortunately, a list of only 100 records could not encompass.

This 1979 video is virtually a manifesto for the music video, and was fittingly the first video played on MTV in 1982.
Since the whole video is a daydream of Benetar's character, it allows him to portray her as a World War II era pilot, something that women were not allowed to do in real life.
The final confrontation is staged as a sustained shot; its unblinking length suggests the embarrassment of the husband and the defiance of the wife are both intensely felt emotions that are going deeper and deeper, and not receding or fading.

CBC.ca - Arts - Music - Death of the Video Star
While music videos have declined in value as promotional tools, they have fuelled the profiles of a new school of short-form auteurs, to the point where their works can now be savoured in a more rarefied context than in the frenetic flow on music channels.
Due to a scarcity of videos for MTV to play, artists who were savvy about the possibilities of the new medium gained prominence very rapidly; Duran Duran, Culture Club and Billy Idol were among the first to capitalize.
For casual viewers of the major music stations, it’s become increasingly difficult to happen upon even the videos that are supposed to be in high rotation.

A common criticism of metal bands, such as Metallica, is the fact that many of them end up "selling out" their harder edged sound for a more polished mainstream sound in the quest to be number one.
It seems to be sad but true, but in the realm of heavy metal, many of the greats out there often turn to the "dark side" of commercialism or awkward changes in the quest for higher success and more riches.
