 eWire :: spring 2001 :: The Allstonians (page 2 of 3)
We are treated with respect in Boston but still, as a ska band, you are sort of treated as the little brother, the "not-so-serious" musicians because you play a silly, happy music called ska.
How about this: Beatles, XTC, Frank Sinatra, punk, new wave...a real musician should be influenced by all genres of music or else he becomes a member of a band like The Romantics, nothing wrong with that band but they write the same stuff over and over and over and over and...
The bigger the number of ska bands, the bigger the chances are that the band will suck.

With one of The Lists Exists' key players, Max Lewis, at Emerson College in Boston and the other three, Mirza Ramic '05, Lajoie, and his brother Chris '04, all at Bowdoin, practicing is infrequent.
The List Exists marks ambient Icelandic band Sigur Ros as their main influence, while nodding at Portishead, Air, and Kid A-era Radiohead as other sources of inspiration.
Even though their smooth, mesmerizing sound was programmed after performances from two heavy metal bands, the crowd's response was immediately positive, which proved both surprising and encouraging to the musicians.

Instead of doing traditional a cappella songs of the '50s, today's a cappella musicians cover artists like U2, Peter Gabriel and the Dave Matthews Band, while also pushing to do more originals that sound like what's playing on mainstream music stations.

Singer Jason "King" Kendall, decked out in a "wife beater" to show off the prerequisite arm full of tattoos, which stretched almost as long as his sideburns, certainly had the required amount of machismo/bravado to front this type of group, basically taunting, if not daring, the audience not to like them.

As with most musicians, Guster tends not to directly reveal the meanings of their songs, preferring instead to let the listener derive their own meaning.
Following is a list of tunes Guster has covered live; the "Band" listed is the band best-known for the song in question, not necessarily the original writer.
Guster is a Boston-area-based trio comprised of Adam Gardner (vocals, guitar, keys and cool shaky thing), Ryan Miller (vocals, guitar, bass, and occasionally piano and harmonica), and Brian Rosenworcel (percussion and rare vocals).
