People keep asking me where to find information about how to write a country or language name in the native language and script for links to localized versions of their web pages, so I thought I'd put a list together myself.
List sources may not always be 100% correct, so caution is advised.

When using Find Name, you may narrow your query (i.e., reduce the number of results) by also listing a Role, which is a word or phrase that describes a significant professional or official role of the artist (e.g., painter, sculptor, architect).
The preferred name for most modern artists is the inverted form (index name), with last name first; this name is appropriate for use in alphabetical lists.
For the names, when the contributor is followed by the word Preferred (e.g., BHA Preferred), it means that this name is preferred by that institution.

Major rivers are general named `the (something) water' in Siouan languages (though there is generally a perfectly good term for river in each language).
This person ignored the issue of what the name is in Ukrainian [I assume that there is no definite article in that language], but concentrated on the "fact" that the article "the" made it sound that Ukraine was a part of something else, and that by dropping the article, the country seemed more independent.
In both cases, the popular interpretation seems to be that in the names of states (either nation-states or states as in American states or Canadian provinces), the definite article diminishes the status or independence of the political entity so named.
