The Irish Peatland Conservation Council, founded in 1982, has drawn up a list of 40 sites covering about 100,000ha which they regard as the minimum necessary to conserve the range of peatland variation existing in Ireland.
Ireland is a member of the European Community and hence is bound by its environmental directives: 20 sites have been designated as EC special protection areas under the Wild Birds Directive.
Ireland is also a member of the Council of Europe: 14 sites have been classified as Council of Europe biogenetic reserves, but no sites have been awarded the Council of Europe European Diploma (1991).

Arches National Park, located in Grand County, Utah, was established by Congress in 1971 and consists of 73, 379 acres.
The Trail was developed in a cooperative manner between the National Park Service, the State of New Jersey, and many other organizations to provide for public appreciation, education, and enjoyment of the many nationally significant natural and cultural sites associated with the coastal areas of New Jersey.
The subtitle, supported by the Park Service and local governments alike, would authorize increased annual appropriations to the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Commission and also for the implementation of the Corridor management plan in order that the public can benefit from the many opportunities the Corridor offers.
