Poland's most valuable natural regions are protected within the boundaries of twenty-two national parks (297 000 hectares - 1 percent of the country's whole area).
Six of them, the Babiogórski, Bialowieski, Bieszczadzki, Karkonoski, Slowinski and Tatrzanski National Parks have been registered on UNESCO's list of World Biosphere Reserves; additionally, the Bialowieski National Park has been included in UNESCO's list of Humanity's World Heritage.
Poland is one of the few countries in Europe which can boast such a variety of landscapes and the existence of large tracks of parkland rich with fauna and flora, preserved in almost their natural state.

 Bialowieski National Park
Bialowieski National Park is the oldest national park in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe.
One third of the Bialowieza is located in Poland with the remainder in Belarus, and the border area is marred by plowed strips and barbed-wire fencing.
It was founded as "Reserve" Forestry in 1921 but officially established as National Park in Bialowieza in 1932.

There are some examples of parks or reserves established under an international agreement.
The Tatras National Park was established in 1948 on the Czechoslovakian side and in 1954 on the Polish side, the Pieniny Park in 1967 and 1954 respectively, and that of Karkonosze in 1963 and 1959.
The transfrontier park concept is clearly an attractive one, and it is hoped that concerted action by states may turn contiguity to the best possible account by cooperating in the management of frontier parks.
