The Republic of Uganda is in East Africa and is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Protected areas are the basis for much of the tourism- generated benefits (and disbenefits) in a region or nation, and indeed, under the best of conditions, tourism can serve as a self-financing mechanism for establishment and maintenance of protected areas ranging from national parks to cultural landscapes and natural monuments.
In the case of the continent-long Andean Cordillera, a corridor of linked protected areas of various kinds, such as forest reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and cultural protected landscapes, would offer needed opportunities for migration and gene-flow of the wonderful biodiversity of the Andes uplands.

The Ugandan Government reopened Rwenzori National Park, on the western border with Congo, in 2001 in response to decreased rebel activity on the eastern slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains and environs.
Prior LRA activity in Murchison Falls National Park in 2001 included at least one incursion into the northern part of the park, when a number of Ugandan tourists were killed.
SAFETY AND SECURITY: U.S. citizens living in or planning to visit Uganda should be aware of threats to their safety from insurgent groups, particularly in the northern region near the border with Sudan, along the western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in the southwest near the border with Rwanda.

Uganda National Parks intends to take over some of the responsibilities of RMS now that the Rwenzori have been gazetted a national park.
Now that the mountains have been gazetted a national park, it is anticipated that local communities will be allowed to participate in all aspects of park management, in order to overcome current fears that their traditional use of forest resources will be curtailed.

With 20 national parks, 8 wildlife refuges, 1 national archaeological preserve, 26 protected forest areas, 9 forest reserves, 7 wildlife sanctuaries, and 1 national forest, Costa Rica has more of its area (27%) set aside in parks and preserves than any other country on earth.
