Neuroscience - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neuroscience is a field of study which deals with the structure, function, development, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and pathology of the nervous system, divided most generally into the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), and the peripheral nervous system, consisting of the myriad nerve pathways running throughout the body.
Some researchers believe that cognitive neuroscience provides a bottom-up approach to understanding the mind and consciousness that is complementary to, or may replace, the top-down approach of psychology.
His discovery that the cortical layers of the brain are composed of millions of individual cells (neurons), and that those cells can become polarized, laid the foundation for the modern understanding of neuronal functioning.

Cognitive neuroscience is a branch of neuroscience and biological psychology involving the study of the neural mechanisms of cognition, but sometimes is seen as part of a wider interdisciplinary study of cognition, cognitive science.
Neurochemistry is a branch of neuroscience that is heavily devoted to the study of neurochemicals.
Evolutionary neuroscience is a young field which awaits a general unified theory of neuroscience in order for its full integration into the accepted framework of evolutionary biology.

Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General - Chapter 2
The section highlights topics including symptoms, diagnosis, epidemiology (i.e., research having to do with the distribution and determinants of mental disorders in population groups, including various racial and ethnic minority groups), and cost, all of which are discussed in greater and more pointed detail in the chapters that follow.
In retrospect, early biological models of the mind seem impoverished and deterministic—for example, models that held that “levels” of a neurotransmitter such as serotonin in the brain were the principal influence on whether one was depressed or aggressive.
Neuroscience is far beyond that now, working to integrate information coming “bottom-up” from genes and molecules and cells, with information flowing “top-down” from interactions with the environment and experience to the internal workings of the mind and its neuronal circuits.
