The largely Puerto Rican, but also Mexican and white, activists of the PRCC frame their activities as cultural resistance, and their stated goal is to forge a self-sustaining Puerto Rican community in Humboldt Park as well as build the movement against U.S. colonialism in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Ricans are also a diaspora people in Paul Gilroy's cultural sense of the concept, which defines culture not confined in "racial, ethnic or national essences" (155), but involving ties and cultural syncretism between people scattered across the globe.
Puerto Ricans do not want to become Americanized, he says, and their culture is defined by Puerto Rico as a symbolic focal point, regardless of its political status.

Since 1935, the building has been established as the Museum of the History of Science, with exhibitions including the scientific instruments given to Oxford University by Lewis Evans (1853–1930), amongst them the world's largest collection of astrolabes.
One wing of the building is occupied by the Taylor Institution, the modern languages faculty of the university.

A brick five-story building called the Clocktower (pictured) stands near the Third Avenue Bridge on-ramp, and there are satellite dishes bolted to a few of its windowsills, marking, like pins in a map, where residents have replaced factory workers.
