CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: The Irish (In Countries Other Than Ireland)
In 1855 the first state emigration depot was opened in Castle Garden at the lower end of Manhattan Island, and since then millions of immigrants have streamed through this gateway, under the inspection and protection of the officials, on their way to the various places throughout the land where they were to make their homes.
In 1874 the Congress of the United States assumed control of the question of immigration, and the admission and supervision of arriving immigrants are now in charge of a Commissioner of General Immigration appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury.
Of the fourteen provinces now (1906) constituting the territorial divisions of the Church in the continental united States, nine are governed by archbishop of Irish blood, and forty-eight of the bishops of the seventy-eight dioceses comprised in these provinces are of the Irish race.

 The Case of Comrade Tulayev
These chapter-length snapshots of bureaucrats, functionaries, state prosecutors, workers, revolutionaries—all victims of the Chief, i.e., Joseph Stalin—are woven together around a central conflict: the mysterious murder of a high-ranking government official, Comrade Tulayev.
His creative work as a novelist, though, leads him to envision the psychology of people who in real life were his political enemies.
The essential fact is that in the workers state the workers did not hold political power but were the victims of a counter-revolutionary bureaucracy.

His sense of the United States as hub of an overextended empire informs pieces on "American sissy" Theodore Roosevelt, JFK, CIA spook E. Howard Hunt and the bloated military budget.
It is divided into three sections: state of the art (literature), state of the union (politics), and state of being (personal responses to people and events, not to mention movies and children's books).
In "The State of the Union" essays, Vidal expounds upon American politics and his views on the National Security Council, the CIA and America's on-going imperialistic intentions, which interestingly, have not dated in the least.

 Notes on the Novels List
There are a number of interesting omissions from my list: "Finnegans Wake," for example, and "The Catcher in the Rye." I left off the former because, even if it qualifies as a novel, it does not qualify as a novel written in English (and I defy anyone to prove otherwise).
You'll also notice some books on my list you're sure not to have heard of: "The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft," for example, "The Late George Apley" or "The Pilgrim Hawk." This is one of the reasons why people make lists; to get you to consider the unfamiliar as well as the obvious.
I should also mention that this list is in a state of slow-moving flux.

John Stuart Mill: The Subjection of Women
This being the ostensible state of things, people flatter themselves that the rule of mere force is ended; that the law of the strongest cannot be the reason of existence of anything which has remained in full operation down to the present time.
The natural sequel and corollary from this state of things would be, that since her all in life depends upon obtaining a good master, she should be allowed to change again and again until she finds one.
In another wise just state of things, it is not, therefore, I think, a desirable custom, that the wife should contribute by her labour to the income of the family.

Who are novelists voting for? - - Slate Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Most novelists live in their imagination, which is a fine place to be until the bad guys come knock knock knocking.
Being away from the United States for an extended period of time, even while surrounded by the beauty of Rome, a writer starts to miss out on our country's brilliant diversity, the rhythms of spoken American English, the back-and-forth of a crowded diner early in the morning.
I'm not convinced that the political opinions of a novelist are any more significant than anyone else's, but as a citizen, a libertarian leftist, and a yellow dog Democrat, I'm pleased to say that I'm voting for John Kerry.

Amazon.de: Granta 81. Best of Young British Novelists 2003. The Magazine of New Writing.: English Books: Ian Jack   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The practice of showcasing novelists through a selection of short stories, novel excerpts and works-in-progress is obviously a compromise, as only those writers who are particularly skilled at short fiction will be seen at their best.
Teasers are never as satisfying as completed works and a few contributors--such as Sarah Waters and Alan Warner--don't come off as well as they might, simply because their excerpts cry out for context.
Anyone who is particularly interested in new British fiction would do well to regard this issue as a reading list, not a representative anthology, even though a number of delights are to be found within.

The reading units were followed by class discussion of the controversial elements in each book, the positive or negative merits in each work, and whether each book met the court test of having social value.
Role-playing was used in the first reading unit with students assuming the roles of a parent complaining about the book, a parent defending the right to read, the high school librarian, the high school English teacher, school board members, and high school students for and against the book.
Bauerle explains this somewhat “illogical” grouping—the books were challenged or banned due to their content, not the color of the author—stating that the books provide realistic portrayals of the fl experience and may have been censored because of the sordidness of that experience.

 CONTEXT: Issue No. 16
As is usually the case both in the United States and abroad, the Finnish publishers at times had difficulty understanding that we were looking for unconventional fiction that probably had sold poorly even in its own country, never mind how it might sell in the United States.
The United States is very wealthy and well-educated, and therefore there is a vast readership for literary novels.
The reality is that all major publishers in the United States (Random House, Harper Collins, Farrar Straus) have profit as their primary responsibility and therefore translations are at odds with why an American publisher would undertake a title to publish.

Amazon.ca: Gay Fiction Speaks: Conversations with Gay Novelists: Books: Richard Canning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
His oldest interviewees are 74-year-old James Purdy and John Rechy, 67, author of the landmark 1963 gay novel, City of Night; the youngest are David Leavitt and Patrick Gale, both in their late-thirties, but each with half a dozen books published.
Toward the end of his interview here, David Leavitt abruptly states that asking if "gay literature" exists is the wrong question: "[T]o me the important question is: 'Is there such a thing as a gay reader?' That's infinitely more relevant.
Aside from placing themselves within a social and historical tradition of "gay writing," the featured authors offer little evidence of an innate "sensibility." The pleasure of the interviews comes from Canning's ability to prompt quirky and ingenious responses from his subjects.

There is nothing I dislike more than a novelist using a how-to guide for the purpose of complaining how he or she should be more well-known and/or critically acclaimed.
She is admirably honest about stating that what works for her won't necessarily work for everyone.
How well she knows it is readily apparent in WRITE AWAY: One Novelist's Approach to Fiction and the Writing Life, because she grounds most of her instructional examples in excerpts from great literature, including classics like TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and modern suspense/thriller novels such as MYSTIC RIVER.

Some fantasy authors may use character creation software to keep track of powers and magic levels and the sort, but those are not as widely used because not everyone writes in that genre.
