 11: Number theory
Number theory is one of the oldest branches of pure mathematics, and one of the largest.
For example, "additive number theory" asks about ways of expressing an integer N as a sum of integers a_i in a set A. If we set f(z) = Sum exp(2 pi i a_i z), then f(z)^k has exp(2 pi i N z) as a summand iff N is a sum of k of the a_i.
Questions in algebraic number theory often require tools of Galois theory; that material is mostly a part of 12: Field theory (particularly the subject of field extensions).

Well, what most concerns me is that some of the comments posted here could start an 'urban myth' that lists have had their day, their only current use is as pathfinders for those adding categories, and that the correct thing is to treat lists as 'to do' things for the categories.
Of course some lists are neglected - as are some pages, and some whole areas of WP with too little editorial support.
And doesn't encourage me. To take something on my mind- one day I might move the magic square topics off [[list of number theory]] topics to their own list.
