In complex analysis there are Carleman formulae (proved already in 1926) which, unlike the Cauchy formula, reconstruct a function holomorphic in a domain D from its values on a part M of the boundary curlyd D of a positive Lebesgue measure.
The analysis problem which intrigued Bendixson more than all others was the investigation of integral curves to first order differential equations, in particular he was intrigued by the complicated behaviour of the integral curves in the neighbourhood of singular points.
These other areas include functional analysis and numerical analysis and within these topics he published papers on the theory of functions, the theory of complex variables, approximation theory in which he was particularly interested in using Bernstein polynomials, the calculus of variations, methods of finding approximate solutions to partial differential equations, and descriptive set theory.

Numerical Analysis is computer graphics without the graphics and rocket science without the rockets.
Numerical Analysis studies the algorithms relevant to those subjects (and many others) with a keen eye toward the theoretical and experimental errors so that reliable algorithms can be designed and implemented.
Topics include: solution of non-linear equations and systems of equations; interpolation; numerical differentiation, integration, solutions of differential equations; approximation using orthogonal polynomials and trigonometric polynomials.

It would be unproductive to try to list all the excellent textbooks on numerical analysis.

Statistical analysis of the assessment data indicates that the second modality where web-based modules for instruction were used in conjunction with a face-to-face lecture delivery mode resulted in higher levels of student performance and satisfaction.
Effectiveness of web-based modules developed for a course in Numerical Methods was measured via three mixed assessment instruments – student satisfaction survey, student performance in a multiple-choice examination based on Bloom’s taxonomy, and summative rating of the modules based on content, learning, usability and technology.
Statistical analysis of the assessment data indicates that web-based modules for instruction improved both student satisfaction and performance.

Numerical Analysis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The role of the numerical analyst is to derive efficient numerical methods for obtaining approximate solutions of a wide variety of mathematical equations, analyse the accuracy and stability properties of the methods and develop the associated computer software to implement the methods.
Thus, numerical analysis plays a vitally important role in all branches of science and engineering, as well as in industry.
The main numerical aspects of this project involve defining and implementing an efficient numerical algorithm, using conforming finite elements, for approximating the biharmonic equation and handling the iteration to resolve the non-linear boundary condition.

Research ranges from basic numerical analysis (finite element, boundary element and finite difference convergence theory) and fast methods (multigrid) to applications in materials science (foam evolution, phase transformations in crystalline alloys, approximation of microstructure, visco-elastic phenomena) and electromagnetism (scattering, inverse scattering and ferromagentism).
Numerical analysis and scientific computing presentations are often featured in the Applied Mathematics seminar series.
Students wishing to study numerical analysis or scientific computing usually enroll in the Applied Mathematics graduate program (see The Graduate Program web pages for more details).

 Numerical Analysis PhD Qualifying Examination
A good general numerical analysis text will cover perhaps half to three-quarters of the material you need to know for the exam, so this is the obvious place to begin your reading.
Again, these topics are adequately covered in many general NA texts, but it may nevertheless be a good idea to gain additional depth and details by consulting a more specialized book, though all of the books listed go well beyond the minimum you will need.
Listed here are the major mathematical topics with which you should be reasonably familiar, along with (highly selective) suggested references for learning or reviewing them at an appropriate level for the exam.

"This is a concise account of certain topics in numerical analysis which a student is expected to know when he reaches an advanced course yet may not have been introduced to in his first course on the subject...This book is organized around the notion of error.
After the concepts of stability and ill-conditioning (important in gauging the effects of all kinds of error) are elucidated in a first part of the book, discretization error, convergence error, and rounding error are each studied separately in a few important situations in the last three parts of the book.
This reprint book addresses some of the basic questions in numerical analysis: convergence theorems for iterative methods for both linear and nonlinear equations; discretization error, especially for ordinary differential equations; rounding error analysis; sensitivity of eigenvalues; and solutions of linear equations with respect to changes in the data.
