If the desired observatory is not in the database a user may copy/create their own database and select it with the environment variable "obsdb", modify the standard database if allowed (any changes to the distributed version should be forwarded to iraf$noao.edu), or use the special observatory name "obspars".

The Apache Point Observatory is located in the Sacramento Mountains in Sunspot, New Mexico (USA) 18 miles south of Cloudcroft.
The observatory consists of the Astrophysical Research Consortium's 3.5-meter telescope, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey 2.5-m telescope with a 20" photometric telescope, and New Mexico State University's 1.0-m telescope.
As of 2004, the 3.5m telescope is being modified for the APOLLO lunar-ranging project.

According to NASA, which earlier this year released a list ranking observatories by age, it is the fourth oldest in the world, after Abu Simbel in Egypt, Stonehenge in Britain and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
"The observatory defines the four main positions of the Moon and three main positions of the Sun during a year, the autumnal and vernal equinox and winter and summer solstice." One specially positioned marker shows that the observatory was also used to follow the movement of the star cluster Pleiades.
According to Cenev, the observatory was designed by the end of the Bronze Age and suggests a highly developed civilisation.

The UK has a number of Radio Astronomy sites, which are recognized, nationally and internationally.
Their locations, along with the list of European Observatories, are listed in Annex A. The observatories operations are purely passive.
At present, there are no current plans to increase the number of UK radio observatories.
