PBS Online - Lost Liners - Empress of Ireland
Soon the 14,191 ton liner had slowed to a crawl, but Kendall kept her bow pointing on the course he had chosen and waited for a clear sign that the other ship was safely past.
As the Empress of Ireland listed sharply to starboard, water began rushing into portholes left open despite the rule requiring their closure once a voyage was under way.
After 10 minutes, the liner lurched and lay on her side with hundreds of passengers perched on her hull, a situation that momentarily seemed "like sitting on a beach watching the tide come in," according to one survivor.

Ocean liner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ocean liners typically were strongly built with high freeboards to withstand sea states and adverse conditions encountered in the open ocean, and had large capacities for fuel and other stores which would be consumed on their multi-day or mulit-week voyages.
Ocean liners were the primary mode of intercontinental travel for over a century, from the mid-19th century to the 1960s, when they were finally supplanted by airliners.
Notable transatlantic liners included the SS United States, which was the last ocean liner to hold the Blue Riband and the SS France, which held the record for the longest passenger ship from when she entered service in 1961 until the launch of RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2003.

Built by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, in St. Nazaire, France, she was the third of four liners that the French Line constructed as part of an agreement with the French government in 1912.
The Normandie had a threefold purpose: to be the world's largest liner ever, to be the fastest on the North Atlantic, and to be a floating center of French art and decoration.
Of these, the Normandie triumphed in all three, being the first liner over 60,000 tons and 1,000 feet, capturing the Blue Riband (though it was continually denied by the French Line, in case she did not beat the Rex), and was an extremely beautiful ship.
