The Airbus A320 is a short-to-medium range commercial passenger aircraft manufactured by Airbus.
The A320 was targeted at the global fleet replacement requirements for the 727 and early variants of the 737.
Airbus recently has started installing LCD (liquid crystal) display units in the flight deck of its new A318, A319, A320, and A321 flight decks instead of the original CRT (cathode ray tube) displays.

The A320 has given rise to a family of aircraft which share a common design but are a little smaller (the A319), a lot smaller (the A318), or a little larger (the A321).
While Airbus was hoping to market the A318 as a regional jet alternative, laws in both the U.S. and Europe have kept it in the same class as larger aircraft for calculating landing fees and the like, so regional operators have avoided it.

Airbus' new aircraft was launched in 1987 as a long-range complement to the short-range Airbus A320 and the medium-range A300.
At the time, the newest long-range widebody (the twinjet Boeing 767) was at a disadvantage against aircraft such as the 747 because of the ETOPS problem: two-engined aircraft have to stay within close range of emergency airfields in case one of their engines malfunctions.
Airbus' engineers designed the A340 in parallel with the twin-engined Airbus A330: both aircraft share the same wing and similar fuselage structure, and borrow heavily from the advanced avionics developed for the A320.

The Ultimate Airbus A310 - American History Information Guide and Reference
The Airbus A310 is a short to medium range widebody airliner developed from the Airbus A300 and manufactured by Airbus Industrie.
The A300 and A310 established Airbus as a major competitor to Boeing and allowed it to go ahead with the more ambitious A330/A340 family.
The A310 has long been operated by many of the world's airforces as a pure transport, however some are now being converted to the Multi Role Tanker Transport configuration by EADS, providing an aerial refueling capability.

 Airbus A320
The Airbus A320 is a short to medium range commercial passenger aircraft manufactured by Airbus Industrie.
It is the best-selling passenger aircraft in the world (at 2003) and was the first airliner with a digital fly-by-wire flight control system, where the pilot controls flight surfaces through the use of electronic signals rather than mechanically with pulleys and hydraulic systems.
However, these sales figures include the Airbus A321, which is intended to compete with another Boeing product, the 757, and the Airbus A318, which is intended to compete with the 717 which by the way, for fleet commonality purposes may be swapped with 737-600.

The type certificate for the A320 was awarded by the JAA on February 26, 1988.
After entering the market in March 1988 with Air France, the A320 family rapidly expanded: the 185-seat A321 was launched in 1989; the 124-seat A319 was launched in 1993; and the 107-seat A318 was launched in 1999.

The A320 was the initial member of the family and competes in the 150-seat market segment with the Boeing [BA] 737-400 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-83.
The A321, a 185-seat aircraft, is a 7 meter stretch of the A320 with uprated engines and landing gear, local structural reinforcement and modified wing trailing edges.
Both the A319 and A320 are becoming increasingly popular with operators and passengers as evidenced by a growing fleet and substantial order book.
