 Encyclopedia: List of operettas
Operetta (literally, little opera) is a performance art-form similar to opera, though it generally deals with less serious topics.
Operetta is often considered less "serious" than opera, although this has more to do with the generally comic plots than with the caliber of the music.
Operetta grew out of the French opéra comique around the middle of the 19th century, to satisfy a need for short, light works in contrast to the full-length entertainment of the increasingly serious opéra comique.

Lesson Tutor: Classical composer Franz Lehar biography
One of the most popular of all operettas, it was instantly successful, although it was thought rather risqué, given its romantic entanglements.
Lehar's operettas cleverly tuned in to the traditional Viennese spirit of sweetness and charm, which was by then increasingly tempered with a nostalgia for a happier past.
When he turned to operetta his friends berated him for what they saw as a lapse of taste; his voice, and his musicianship, they said, was too good for operetta.

Benatzky began a musical career as a writer of song lyrics and as conductor in Munich, before becoming director of a cabaret in Vienna and writing words and music for songs, particularly for the singer Josma Selim whom he married in 1914.
There he concentrated on music for spectacular revue-style operettas, including Casanova (a Johann Strauss pastiche, 1928) and Im weissen Rossl ('White Horse Inn', 1930).
For the latter work Benatzky wrote the bulk of the score including the title song, but others of the best-known numbers were by Robert Stolz, Robert Gilbert and Bruno Granichstaedten.

 Salon | Valentine's Day
Sometimes, Bacharach blended Warwick's creamy voice, at once sophisticated and accessible, in with the woodwinds and brass (on the instrumental break of "I Say a Little Prayer," she mimics an alto flute); other times, Warwick asserted herself with gospel-trained ferocity amid the tumult.
A couple of years earlier, Phil Spector had set his girl group operettas in a downtown world of tenement stoops; Bacharach brought his Everygirl Warwick uptown and put her in a high-rise elevator to the stars.
As unique as Bacharach's rhythms and melodies may have been, they were also remarkably elastic, lending themselves to all sorts of treatments.
