  Organic chemistry Summary
Organic chemistry received a boost when it was realized that these compounds could be treated in ways similar to inorganic compounds and could be manufactured by means other than 'vital force'.
Organic nomenclature: Because of the difficulty due to the very large number and variety of organic compounds, chemists realized early on that the establishment of an internationally accepted system of naming organic compounds was of paramount importance.
Because many organic compounds have relatively low boiling points and/or dissolve easily in organic solvents there exist many methods for separating mixtures into pure constituents that are specific to organic chemistry such as distillation, crystallization and chromatography techniques.

Air Quality: Revision to Definition of Volatile Organic Compounds--Exclusion of Acetone | Federal Register | USEPA
This action adds acetone to the list of compounds excluded from the definition of VOC on the basis that these compounds have been determined to have negligible photochemical reactivity.
The petitioners based their request for the exclusion of acetone on a demonstration that the photochemical reactivity of acetone is not appreciably different from that of ethane, which is the most reactive compound on the current list of compounds which are named in the definition of VOC as being of negligible reactivity.
Ethane was one of the four compounds on the negligibly reactive list in the 1977 policy statement.

ATSDR - PHA - Sealand Restoration, Lisbon, St. Lawrence County, New York
Organic contaminants (methylene chloride and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) were attributed to laboratory contamination.
Surface water samples collected off-site had some organic contamination; however, all those organic compounds, including methylene chloride and acetone, were also in the well drilling water (obtained off-site) and the field blanks, indicating laboratory contamination.
One semivolatile organic compound, di-n-butylphthalate, was detected at 1,200 ug/kg in one sediment sample, approximately 200 feet upstream of the culvert which crosses McFadden Road.

 DuPont(tm) Formacel® | Regulatory Information
The definition excludes a number of organic compounds from the definition of VOC on the basis that they are negligibly reactive and do not contribute to tropospheric ozone formation.
The rulemaking contained a definition of volatile organic material or volatile organic compound which, in effect, exluded from that definition certain organic compounds that EPA had determined in previously-issued policy statements were negligibly reactive and do not contribute to violations of the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for ozone.
Because there are thousands of organic compounds at issue and because a very small fraction of these compounds may be reactive, EPA has concluded that it is an administrative necessity and reasonable to define VOC to include all organic compounds except those EPA has determined to be negligibly reactive.

Notably absent from this list were organic compounds of the alkali metals lithium, sodium, and potassium.
In the early days of organometallic chemistry, two syntheses of organoalkali-metal (mostly organosodium) compounds in which they were not actually isolated were discovered: the reaction of sodium with an alkyl or aryl halide and the reaction of sodium with a dialkyl- or diarylmercury compound.
Although organolithium compounds are less reactive than the analogous organic compounds of sodium and potassium, they are soluble in organic solvents (the alkyllithiums, with the exception of methyllithium, in hydrocarbons, the aryllithiums in ethers), less prone (with some exceptions) to attack diethyl ether, and, in general, easier to handle.
