Parties that were not represented at Westminster, but had seats in the devolved assemblies and European Parliament included the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom Independence Party, the various national Green parties, and the Scottish Socialist Party.

In Northern Ireland, the election was dominated in the unionist community by a battle between the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to be the region's largest unionist party in Parliament.

The amount parties are allowed to spend during an election campaign depends on the number of constituencies they are contesting and where these constituencies are located.
In practice, this means a party contesting one seat in England can spend the same amount on its national campaign as a party contesting 27 seats; while parties contesting 28 or more seats will be able to spend progressively more.

The British National party is to field 112 candidates at the election, entitling it to a five minute election broadcast and a free mailshot to 7 million voters in the seats they are contesting.
The party is targeting seats including Burnley, Stoke South, Broxbourne, Dagenham and Keighley, where Nick Griffin, the BNP leader, is challenging Labour's Ann Cryer.
Unlike in 1997, when the threshold was much lower, the party did not field enough candidates to qualify for a broadcast at the 2001 election.

If there are no parties contesting the election for whom you actively support then you should vote for the lessor of the evils (pun intended) a that is the best option for the choices available.

I worked as an election inspector in the state of Michigan in the Presidential Elections of 2000, 2004, and the primary elections of 2004, in two different precincts.
I know that all the interested parties for all the races in the townships and cities go to the county board of elections to see the results tabulated.
