  It's official: Maharashtra flood toll is 1493
Maharashtra government on Monday submitted to the Bombay high court a list of 1,493 people who died in the recent deluge in various parts of the state and due to various flood-related diseases.
The list was submitted to the bench of Chief Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Justice S F Vajifdar in response to a public interest litigation filed by a group of TV and Bollywood personalities alleging total failure of the disaster management system of the state leading to floods.
The list contained the names of the deceased, their age, sex, address, cause of death and compensation amount paid to their kin and missing persons in the recent deluge and due to flood-related diseases.

Mr Kumar said that a household survey was carried out on the directive of the Centre during RJD regime and the BPL list was prepared on the basis of that RJD and Congress were responsible for the error in the list and the NDA government was only trying to rectify it, he said.

The petitioners informed that they have submitted a list of 42 non-governmental organisations to the court in consultation with the advocate general, which would assist the government and coordinate in collection and disbursement of funds in total transparency to the victims without any delay.
The PIL alleged that the disaster management system was a "total failure" and sought a reply from authorities on the steps taken by them to provide relief to victims of the heavy rains in the state, besides the measures adopted to tackle such a calamity in future.
It had also expressed serious concern over piling up of garbage and non-availability of drinking water in various parts of Maharashtra in the recent deluge and asked the state to explain what steps it had taken to prevent outbreak of epidemic in the flood-affected areas.
